When Autumn and Timothy first contacted us in early fall of 2016 about shooting their Gatlinburg, Tennessee vow renewal wedding, the wild fires that ravaged the Smoky Mountains and Gatlinburg, Tennessee had not happened yet. In November 2016 however, after a late summer and fall drought, the wildfires, fueled by 60 to 80 mile per hour winds, ravaged more than 15,000 acres in Gatlinburg, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When we arrived on Easter weekend in April 2017 to Gatlinburg, we weren’t sure what to expect, and there were still very visible signs of the fires that had destroyed thousands of homes and condos, acres and acres of land, burned trees and hillsides, and took at least 14 lives. In fact, the cabin where Autumn and Timothy had their vow renewal was literally the only structure still standing on the road leading up the mountain. That area was one of the hardest hit areas. There were literally foundations of burned out cabins surrounding Autumn and Timothy’s cabin, and charred remains of trees littered the mountainside just behind their cabin. It was a very surreal and sobering view knowing that just a few months earlier, the entire area where we were standing had been glowing with fire. Now as we arrived and looked at the remaining damage, there were also signs of new growth in bright green grass, and animals scurrying along around the burned out tree trunks.
Autumn and Timothy had married four years earlier in a small ceremony, in the winter, in these very mountains. Autumn had long dreamed of a pretty wedding, and in these mountains, she certainly got it. Although this wedding was small with just family and a few close friends present, the details were pretty and sweet. Autumn chose gray linens with gold accents for her reception tables. Her makeup and hair were stunning, and her dress was perfect for her. Autumn and Timothy’s vows were completely heartfelt and emotional; both Autumn and Timothy cried reading their vows to one another. They served breakfast for dinner following their ceremony and had a little cornhole competition at the end of the evening.
We tried to give Autumn and Timothy the wedding photos they deserved and made sure to shoot their vow renewal just like any wedding we shoot. We were sure to include lots of detail shots, as well as the traditional family photos and intimate portraits. The photos of Autumn and Timothy with their little boy are just precious and some of my favorites. It was a beautiful Saturday on Easter weekend, with a little sun, lots of clouds, and a beautiful backdrop.
We are so grateful and honored to have been chosen by Autumn and Timothy to shoot their vow renewal wedding. It was a laid back day with lots of laughs, a few sweet, emotional tears, a wealth of fun and jokes, and a beautiful bride and handsome groom. We hope that Autumn and Timothy enjoyed their day as much as we enjoyed being there.
